An immersive and practical pathway
Phase 1
SOCIAL ACTION
Intercultural Volunteer Experience between July 12 and 18 2024 in various social organizations in Brazil and in others Latin American countries.
The 1st phase will take place between July 12th and 18th, 2024. During this phase, young people will be invited to engage in an intense volunteering experience, in small groups, in different social organizations in Brazil and other countries in Latin America. Educating based on this paradigm means enriching the formation of young people who, upon returning to their territory and community of origin, can promote a culture of fraternity in all sectors of civil, economic, cultural, and political life, and act as multipliers of change.
This phase aims to strengthen youth leadership. Furthermore, it aims to foster the creation of networks and alliances with Latin America in order to develop tools and mechanisms to enhance youth leadership through voluntary work. This action will be carried out in partnership with the international volunteering program MilONGa (www.milongaproject.org) and with UNIRedes, an organization that brings together more than 50 organizations, initiatives, and social movements from 12 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, promoting transformative actions in various fields (art and culture, environment, democratic governance, education, labor, etc.) through the participation of all actors involved.
According to its 2014 Charter of Principles, UNIRedes is “a network that seeks to be a presence that overcomes barriers, that consoles, that enlivens and stimulates all people who come together and work together to make justice and fraternity more visible and concrete in the world.”

Phase 1
SOCIAL ACTION
Intercultural Volunteer Experience between July 12 and 18 2024 in various social organizations in Brazil and in others Latin American countries.
PHASE 2
Central event

The 2nd phase will be the main event in Aparecida, São Paulo, which will take place between July 19th and 21st, 2024. During this phase, young people will gather for three days for a great moment of exchange of experiences and cultural manifestations. The event will be streamed to over 120 countries, where hundreds of thousands of young people will come together to spread the Genfest.
It will be a grand festival of ideas, thoughts, and initiatives that will inspire thousands of young people from different cultures, ethnicities, and religions to live for a united world. All of this will be accompanied by music, choreographies, testimonies of experiences, best practices, and thematic paths.
It will be an opportunity to launch new projects and initiatives for the next 5 years. Genfest is also a cultural project that aims to raise awareness among as many young people as possible about the issues of interdependence, fair and sustainable development, and solidarity, in order to form a new generation within the cultural paradigm of fraternity and relationality. In this sense, the planned actions aim to bring about cultural changes, which means a new message and a critical perspective on central issues of the contemporary world, such as consumption-based lifestyles that are connected to global environmental problems and social justice.

Level 2
Central event
Central Event of Experience Exchange and Cultural Manifestations between July 19 and 21, 2024 in Aparecida, Brazil.
Phase 3
Pathways Communities
Meeting spaces between the 21st and 24th of July 2024 in Aparecida, where young people can share their talents and passions for the formation of leaders and the elaboration of concrete proposals and projects aimed at building a more united world.
PATHWAYS
COMMUNITIES
The 3rd phase of Genfest will take place from July 21st to July 24th in Aparecida. It proposes the experience of Pathways Communities, defined as meeting spaces where young people can share their talents and passions. These communities offer opportunities to discover amazing people, concrete forms of engagement, and initiate actions and projects aimed at building a more united world, with the following objectives:
- Respond to the local and global challenges of today’s world.
- Activate processes of personal and collective change.
- Bring fraternity and reciprocity to all dimensions of human life.
Building on the experiences of the previous phases of Genfest, in this third phase, participants will have the opportunity to engage in the Pathways Communities, which offer the possibility of making a concrete commitment through activities that promote fraternity, dialogue, social and political engagement, within a “glocal” context (local projects with a global perspective).
Pathways Communities:
- Economy and Work
- Interculture and Dialogue
- Spirituality and Human Rights
- Health and Ecology
- Art and Social Commitment
- Education and Research
- Communication and Media
- Active Citizenship and Politics
The central objective of this phase is to create a network of Pathways collaborators, so that each young participant of Genfest, upon returning to their country or region in Brazil, can locally engage in the area they identify with, connected to a network of young people from around the world. With this network, it will be possible to increase visibility and contribute to creating favorable public opinion for the cause of a United World and Universal Fraternity.
This third phase will include moments of gathering, workshops, and exchange of experiences among the participants who have chosen one of the 8 Pathways paths. A team consisting of adult professionals and young people with diverse backgrounds and professional and voluntary work experience has been created to organize and carry out this phase of Genfest. This team will work with a broader group of young people and professionals committed to the different Pathways paths, and through the development of a work plan, it aims to ensure the sustainability and strengthening of this network going forward.

Com essa rede, será possível dar maior visibilidade, bem como contribuir para criar opinião pública favorável à causa do Mundo Unido e da Fraternidade Universal.

Common questions
What is the GENFEST?
The Genfest is a festival of the youth sector of the Focolare Movement that brings together people from all over the world, of different religious and non-religious convictions, ethnicities and cultures. The event takes place every six years at international level, and in 2024, for the 1st time the Genfest will be in Brazil, from the 19th to the 21st of July, in Aparecida. The sanctuary of Nossa Senhora Aparecida, patroness of Brazil, was chosen to welcome these young people from all over the world and ‘irradiate love’.
How was Brazil chosen to host the GENFEST?
At the conclusion of Genfest 2018 in Manila, Brazil was announced as the country chosen to host Genfest 2024. Since then, a journey of preparation has begun in various aspects and involving countless people.
What is the general objective of Genfest?
To awaken the protagonism of youth in the realization of universal fraternity, connecting, promoting and celebrating actions that dare to care for the environment, individuals and peoples, especially the most vulnerable.
What are the specific objectives of Genfest in Brazil?
To know the cultural and religious diversity present in Brazil and Latin America; to provide young people with the opportunity to carry out concrete actions in Latin America; to deepen the concept and practice of integral ecology; to make known initiatives that promote universal fraternity; to deepen the economy of communion and the new economies and adopt them as a possible way to overcome social injustices.
What is the target audience of Genfest?
Young people between the ages of 18 and 35, from all over the five continents, of all ethnicities, cultures, religions or without a religious background, who are already involved or wish to get to know this experience of building a united world. For the main event of Genfest, in Aparecida, 6 thousand young people are expected.
What is the concept of the logo of the GENFEST 2024?
The winning art was develop by the young Italian Luana Gravina and communicates symbolical aspects that represent universal fraternity with the theme “Together to Care”. The logo has elements that represent the different cultures and that intertwine to form a complex figure, which suggests the connection between different worldviews. It has four lines that symbolize, in number and colors, the four elements of nature (water, air, fire and earth). The peculiarity of this art is its ability to become a pattern: if put side by side in a repetitive manner, it gives life to circles representing uniqueness and connection networks. Ideally, the lines a cross-like figure, fundamental element of the spirituality of Unity, as defined by the Focolare Charism.
What are the stages of Genfest 2024?
The Genfest 2024 will unfold in 3 consecutive phases:
1st Phase: Social Action (July 12th to 18th, 2024) in Brazil and other countries of Latin America;
2nd Phase: Main Event – Testimony and Celebration (July 19th to 21st, 2024) in Aparecida-SP;
3rd Phase: Pathways Communities (July 21st to 24th, 2024) in Aparecida-SP.
How to get to the Basilica of Aparecida, place of the Genfest Festival 2024?
The journey time between São Paulo and the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Aparecida is approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes over a distance of approximately 179 km (111 miles).
The city is on the banks of the Presidente Dutra Highway (BR-116) where there are two main entrances to Aparecida: one for those heading towards São Paulo on the BR-116 should take exit 71, on the right.
For those heading towards Rio de Janeiro, the easiest access is via exit 75, passing through an overpass and crossing over the Dutra, on the left. At the National Sanctuary, there is paid parking and there are other parking lots in the nearby streets.
Those arriving in Aparecida have two route options to go from the bus station to the National Sanctuary: the path can be taken either from the front of the bus station, facing the Saint Benedict Church, or from the back, which faces the the railroad.
Those who choose to exit through the front, access the National Sanctuary through the entrance gates on the side wall, on Getúlio Vargas Avenue, under the walkway that leads to the Old Basilica.
Those who go through the back, access the National Sanctuary through the entrance gates on the North side, on Dr. Julio Prestes Avenue.
Although the route leaving from the back (John Paul II Avenue) is flatter and slightly shorter, if the trip is made on a weekend, it is not a recommended route, as on these days it is occupied by the “feirinha” (a type of farmer’s market).
While the path leaving from the front of the bus station has a slight slope at the beginning, then continues downhill to the side wall of the Sanctuary, on Getúlio Vargas Avenue.
